The process of bringing an invention from conception to market is complex and confusing. As experts in this field, Innovate Design wanted to create an animation to simply and clearly explain to their clients how to achieve this.
They came to me with a script and an initial idea of style. I firstly put together a mood board to develop on the style, and then created a full storyboard. One of my main aims was to try and have the animation flow seamlessly, with as few hard cuts as possible. To achieve this I used a combination of shape morphs, camera moves and sneaky transitions.
Once the storyboard had been approved I took it into After Effects to create the animation. The style was primarily 2D, but some parts required the use of 3D to achieve. For example, I initially attempted to animate the unfurling patent document in 2D but quickly realised it wasn’t going to look how I envisioned. In the end I opted to create it in 3D in Maya and render it out with a toon style shader. I then composited it into After Effects and applied the same style as the rest of the animation to make it fit in seamlessly. I was very happy with the result.
Below is the final video once the client added in video footage of their working environment and two additional summary sections.
