I worked on a campaign for James Latham with the aim of creating a humanoid robot character with his body parts made from different materials from the James Latham range. They wanted to showcase their twelve new materials, which is what led to the name D.Zen.
For this campaign I created the character in Maya, which I then used to create a series of animations, as well as various still poses for print and web.
The character design went through various iterations. It started out having slender, human proportions and moving in a very agile and ninja-like way. However, the client felt that this gave off the wrong impression. In the end the design moved towards a friendlier, shorter and more robotic character and an animation style to match.
It was a fun project to work on, and it was an enjoyable challenge to work out how to animate the character within the limitations of its size and robotic motion.
